What is an Instant Messenger?

Our Instant Messenger lets you chat in real time with another member using text, audio or video. Here is a labelled diagram of the Instant Messenger.

What do I need to use the Instant Messenger?

You will need a connection to the internet, a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Safari or Opera) and the Macromedia Flash Player 6.0+. The Macromedia Flash Player is a plugin for your web browser which allows you to view Flash content on the web. Most current web browsers come with the Flash Player plugin installed. If you receive a notice—when trying to connect to the Instant MessengerTM—that the Flash Player is not installed, you may download it and install it for free from Macromedia at:

How do I use the Instant Messenger?

Whenever you see the "Online now - connect!" icon (below) displayed on a persons profile or summary it means that this person is online. If you click on the icon it will open a pop up window and launch the Instant Messenger. You can then type a message to chat with the person, or open a video or audio chat session with them.

How do I have a text conversation?

First open the Instant Messenger window by clicking on "online now -connect!" (image above) , then type your message and press send or hit enter. It may take a few seconds for the other person to open their window and respond at first, however once they have opened their window you can chat in real time.

 

How do I send a virtual kiss?

To send a virtual kiss, click on the kiss button (shown as a forward arrow) then select kiss.

 

How do I send a virtual smack?

To send a virtual smack, click on the smack button (shown as a forward arrow) then select smack.

How do I send a message in bold, italic or underlined?

Type your message. Select the part of your message you would like to format. You may click any one or more of the formatting buttons to apply that style to the text (B for bold, I for italic, U for underline).

How do I block or unblock someone?

To block someone from contacting you click on the block button (shown as a circle with diagonal line across it). If you later change your mind, you can click one more time on the block button and it will unblock them.

How do I add someone to my Online Friends List?

To add someone to your Online Friends List click on the "add buddy" button (shown as a + sign).

 

How do I open my web cam?

First click on "open AV", to open a window which will say "allow vietnamhookup.com to access my video and microphone?" and then answer yes to this. Next check the "Video on" button located at the bottom of the Instant Messenger window, then ensure that your video button says "on".

 

How do I open my microphone?

First click on open AV, to open a window which will say "allow vietnamhookup.com to access my video and microphone?" and then answer yes to this. Next check the "Mic on" button located at the bottom of the Instant Messenger window, then ensure that your mic button says "on".

 

How do I view the other person?

First ask them to open their their web cam and microphone. If they have done this you will see a live stream of the other person in the top right hand corner of the Instant Messenger. Check the video and microphone status of that person by viewing the a/v button located at the top of the Instant Messenger.

How do I hear the other person?

First ask them to open their microphone. If they have done this you will hear them when they talk to you. Check the video and microphone status of that person by viewing the a/v button located at the top of the Instant Messenger (shown in picture above). Also check you have speakers attached to your PC and that they are switched on.

How do I close my web cam?

Click on the "Video On" button to turn your video off. The status should then change to display "Video off".

How do I close my microphone?

Click on the "Mic On" button to turn your video off. The status should then change to display "Mic off" (shown in picture above).

How do I find out more about the person I am talking to on the Instant Messenger?

The photo of the member is displayed at the top right of the Instant Messenger. Click on the Members Name at the top of the Instant Messenger to launch their profile and find out more about them.

How can I protect my privacy?

You can choose to have a text only conversation by disallowing vietnamhookup.com from accessing your web cam or microphone by answering "no" to the allow access question when ever you launch the Instant Messenger. You can also close your web cam at any time by clicking on the "video on/off" button or close your microphone at any time by clicking on the mic "on/off"button (shown in picture above).

How do I set my status to ‘away’?

You may set your status to ‘away’ by moving the slider from right to left. To do this, click and hold in your mouse button, slide acrosee, and the release. You will be notified that your status has been changed. You will become available again immediately if you send a message to another user. User’s will not know that you are away until an attempt has been made to send you a message. While your status is away, you may continue to receive messages in the message window.

How do I close the communicator?

To close the Instant Messenger click on the 'x' in the top right hand corner

 

Trouble shooting...

Why wont the Instant Messenger launch?

There are many possible reasons for this. For example, you need to have Flash Player installed, Javascript enabled and to have your 'pop-up stopper' disabled in order for the Instant Messenger to launch. Each of these is explained in detail below.

Can I use the Instant Messenger if I have a pop-up window blocker / pop up stopper installed on my PC?

You must configure your pop-up blocker to allow popups from vietnamhookup.com. Please contact your popup stopper supplier for instructions on how to do so. If this option is unavailable, you must disable the pop-up window blocker. If it is not configured correctly, you will not be able to receive incoming messages from new users. If you use Windows XP Service Pack 2, Norton Internet Security, Yahoo Toolbar or many other popular programs you probably dont realize that you may have a pop-up blocker activated. See below for help to configure pop-up stoppers on these applications.

I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2. Why can't I get the Instant Messenger to work?

Windows XP Service Pack 2 contains a pop-up stopper that will prevent the Instant Messenger from working correctly unless you configure it to allow pop-ups from our website. To configure Windows XP see below:

1) Open Internet Explorer

2) Select 'Tools'

3) Select 'Internet options'

4) Select 'Privacy'

5) Go down to the 'Pop-up Blocker' heading

6) Now do either of the following:

 

I'm using Norton Internet security adblocking. Why can't I get the Instant Messenger to work?

The adblocking feature can prevent cookies and stop the Instant Messenger from working correctly. Please either disable addblocking OR change your Norton adblocking settings by opeing your Norton Internet Security (double click on icon) and doing the following:

1) click on Ad blocking, then configure

 

 

 

2) click advanced

 

3) click add site and type our site name prefixed by www.

 

4) click on "add..." then click permit

 

I am using Zone Alarm Internet Security Add Blocking. Why can't I get the Instant Messenger to work?

When accessing our site, you must make adjustments to your Internet Security Settings. To do this, open Zone Alarm, click Privacy, and put your settings the same as the image below. Cookie Control, Ad Blocking, and Mobile Code Control must all be set to off. Once you have finished at our site, you can restore these settings to the way you found them, to protect you at other sites.

Why do I get an error message "Security Sandbox violation" / why am I having trouble getting the Communicator to initiate conversations?

Our Instant Messenger uses Macromedia Flash Player. Errors and problems can occur if you do not have the latest version of Flash Player Installed in your web browser. To fix this, try downloading the latest version of Flash Player from here...

I'm using Yahoo Toolbar. Why won't the Instant Messenger work?

Yahoo toolbar comes with an optional pop-up stopper. You can see the automatic pop-up stopper in the image below.

You may need to re-configure this to allow pop-ups from our website. Click on the box that says "Always allow pop-ups from this website..." then type vietnamhookup.com then OK.

I'm using Google Toolbar. Why won't the Instant Messenger work?

Google toolbar comes with an optional pop-up stopper. You can see the automatic pop-up stopper in the images below.

You may need to re-configure this to allow pop-ups from our website. Untick the box that says "PopUp Blocker ..." then type vietnamhookup.com then OK.

I can’t see my friend’s video. What’s wrong?

Be sure that your friend has connected his/her video camera correctly. Your friend will receive this error if his/her camera is not connected:

*** Could not connect to your camera. Either your camera is not installed properly or it is in use by another application.

Continue reading on how to configure your camera for the Instant MessengerTM. Once your friend has determined that his/her video is set up correctly, click on the ‘a/v’ button in the top-right pane of the message window. If video is set to ‘off’, click on it once to turn on your video.

My friend can’t see my video. What’s wrong?

Make sure that your camera is connected correctly. You will receive the following error if your camera is not connected:

I can’t hear my friend’s audio. What’s wrong?

Make sure your speakers are connected correctly and that they are turned on. Check your volume levels to confirm that your are receiving sound. Be sure that your friend has connected his/her microphone correctly. Your friend will receive this error if his/her microphone is not connected:

*** Could not connect to your microphone. Either your microphone is not installed properly or it is in use by another application.
